SEO for tradies: how to get more leads from Google

Shaun Ross • April 20, 2026

Tradies across Australia are losing work to competitors who show up on Google, and most of them know it. The problem isn't that SEO is complicated. It's that most SEO advice isn't written for a plumber, electrician, builder, or concreter running a small business without a marketing team. This guide cuts through the noise and focuses on what actually moves the needle for tradies looking to get more leads from Google.

1. Get your Google Business Profile working properly

For tradies, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is often more important than your website. It's what appears in Google Maps and the Local Pack — the top three businesses shown when someone searches "plumber near me" or "electrician Richmond." A properly set up GBP puts you directly in front of people actively looking for your services in your area. At minimum your GBP needs: your exact business name, a local phone number, your website URL, your service areas (list every suburb you work in), your operating hours, your primary category set to your trade (e.g., "Plumber" not "Home Services"), and at least ten recent photos of your work and your team. Log in once a month to post an update and upload new project photos. Google rewards active profiles with better local rankings.

2. Make sure your website targets the right keywords

Your website needs to use the words your potential clients actually type into Google — not the technical language you use internally. A sparky might call it "RCD installation," but the homeowner searches "safety switch installation New Farm." A plumber might say "backflow prevention," but the client searches "backflow valve plumber Brisbane." For each page of your website, identify the phrase your ideal client would search to find that service, and make sure that phrase appears in the page title, the main heading, and naturally throughout the content. You don't need to stuff keywords everywhere, it's better to use them naturally once or twice per section. If you're not sure which keywords to target, search for your own trade in Google and look at what your competitors' pages are titled.

3. Build service pages that rank for individual jobs

One of the most impactful things a tradie can do for SEO is replace a single "Services" page with individual pages for each service type. A single services page listing twenty jobs will rank for almost nothing. A dedicated page titled "Hot Water System Replacement — Brisbane Plumbers" with 400 words of relevant content will rank for searches like "hot water system replacement Brisbane" and generate direct enquiries. This applies to every trade: separate pages for each major service, each with its own keyword-focused title, description, and call to action. If you do residential and commercial work, those should be separate pages too. It's more work upfront, but the SEO return from a properly structured site is dramatically higher than a minimal one-page services listing.

4. Get more Google reviews consistently

Google reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals for tradies. The businesses that appear at the top of local searches typically have the most reviews and the highest average ratings. More importantly, reviews build trust before a client even visits your website. For example, a 4.8-star rating with 60 reviews is a powerful sales tool for a trade business. The system is simple: after every completed job, send the client a direct link to your Google review page via text or email. Make it a habit, not an afterthought. Aim for at least two new reviews per month. Reviews that mention your specific trade and suburb like "excellent plumber in Chermside" carry additional weight as local SEO signals. Respond to every review, positive or negative, in a professional and friendly tone.

5. Make your website mobile-friendly and fast

The majority of trade service searches happen on mobile. Someone with a leaking pipe or a tripped circuit doesn't go home to search on a desktop — they grab their phone. If your website loads slowly on mobile, has text that's too small to read without zooming, or has a phone number that can't be tapped to call directly, you're losing leads to competitors with better mobile sites. Test your site on your own phone right now. Can you find the phone number within three seconds? Does it tap to call? Does the site load in under three seconds on 4G? If the answer to any of these is no, fixing those issues will directly improve your lead conversion rate without spending a dollar on advertising.
