How much does Google Ads cost for Australian construction businesses and tradies? The answer depends on your services, location and the competition for relevant search terms. Semrush estimates from October 2026 highlight just how much costs can vary, from approximately A$1.50 per click for "excavator hire Hobart" to more than A$22 for "plumber Brisbane".

These figures provide a useful starting point for budgeting, although actual advertising costs will depend on your campaign targeting, competition and performance.

Below are the city-by-city benchmarks, why costs vary, budget examples and the fastest ways to cut wasted spend.

How do Google Ads costs compare across Australian capital cities?

Google Ads costs can vary significantly depending on your trade, the services you advertise and the location you're targeting. To illustrate these differences, we've compared estimated costs per click (CPC) for four common construction and trade-related searches across Australia's eight capital cities.

City Concreters Electricians Plumbers Excavator hire
Sydney $6.58 $12.33 $13.39 $3.18
Melbourne $6.77 $13.52 $17.28 $2.49
Brisbane $5.23 $15.61 $22.39 $4.57
Perth $5.20 $16.62 $15.25 $3.45
Adelaide $4.00 $13.53 $16.71 $3.33
Canberra $5.85 $12.63 $20.47 $1.60
Hobart $4.70 $7.90 $4.46 $1.48
Darwin $3.01 $5.36 $9.41 $1.57

The differences between trades can be substantial. For example, the estimated CPC for "plumber Brisbane" is $22.39, compared with $4.57 for "excavator hire Brisbane". Even within the same trade, costs vary between cities, reflecting differences in keyword demand and advertising competition.

However, a lower cost per click doesn't automatically mean better value. For construction businesses, the more important measure is how much it costs to generate a qualified enquiry. Effective keyword targeting, well-structured campaigns and relevant landing pages all influence whether your advertising budget produces worthwhile leads.

Why do Google Ads costs vary between cities?

Google Ads is an auction, so price follows competition and the value of each job. Here's what the data shows:

  • Emergency trades cost the most. Plumbers and electricians pay the highest CPCs in every capital because urgent jobs convert quickly and many businesses compete for them.
  • Sydney isn't always the most expensive. Sydney leads for builders, but Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne all beat it for plumbers, and Perth and Brisbane beat it for electricians.
  • Hobart and Darwin are cheapest across the board. Fewer advertisers bid in smaller markets, so the same budget buys far more clicks.
  • B2B and hire searches are cheaper. Excavator hire clicks are low cost in every city, partly because fewer businesses run well-built campaigns for them.
  • Seasons move prices. Roofing and storm-related searches spike in Queensland and New South Wales storm season, and costs rise with them.

For a plain-English explanation of how click prices are set, see Google's guide to cost-per-click bidding.

How much budget do you need in each city?

Work out budget from cost per lead, not cost per click. A simple formula:

  1. Estimate your average CPC in Australian dollars from your own account or a keyword planner.
  2. Assume a conversion rate. Well-built trade landing pages often convert 8 to 15 per cent of clicks into calls or forms.
  3. Divide CPC by conversion rate to get cost per lead. A $12 click at 10 per cent conversion is a $120 lead.
  4. Multiply by the number of leads you need each month.

Builders usually need fewer leads because each job is worth more, so the budget can be modest even when clicks are dear. For deeper budget guidance by business size, read how much a construction business should spend on Google Ads and our lead cost benchmarks by trade.

How can you cut wasted Google Ads spend?

Most construction accounts we audit waste 20 to 40 per cent of spend on the same handful of problems:

  1. Missing negative keywords. Exclude "jobs", "apprenticeship", "salary", "DIY", "course" and services you don't offer.
  2. Broad location targeting. Target the suburbs you actually service, and set location options to people in your area, not people interested in it.
  3. Sending clicks to the homepage. Each campaign should land on a matching service page with a phone number above the fold.
  4. No call tracking. If you can't see which keywords produce calls, you can't cut the ones that don't.
  5. Running ads when you can't answer. Schedule ads for business hours, or use an answering service so after-hours clicks aren't wasted. Gofer Receptionist answers 24/7.
  6. Bidding on your own brand without a reason. Test whether brand campaigns add leads or just pay for clicks you'd get anyway.

Should you use a Google Ads agency?

Searches for "google ads agency sydney" and "google ads agency melbourne" each draw around 2,400 searches a month, Perth around 1,900 and Brisbane around 1,600 (Semrush AU, October 2026). Plenty of businesses look for help, and with good reason: in high-CPC trades and cities, a few per cent of improvement pays for management quickly.

A good agency should give you clear reporting on calls, forms and cost per lead, and you should own the account. Our Google Ads management is built for construction and trades, with lead tracking through our construction leads service. We work across every capital, including Sydney.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Google Ads cost per click for builders?

Semrush estimates for "concreters + capital city" searches ranged from approximately A$3.01 per click in Darwin to A$6.77 in Melbourne in October 2026. These are indicative costs, with actual Google Ads pricing depending on competition, campaign targeting and ad quality.

Which city has the most expensive Google Ads for tradies?

It depends on the trade. Brisbane had the highest plumber CPC and Perth the highest electrician CPC in our October 2026 data, while Sydney was highest for builders.

Which capital city has the cheapest Google Ads?

Hobart and Darwin had the lowest estimated CPCs across almost every trade we checked.

How much should a tradie spend on Google Ads each month?

Divide your cost per click by your conversion rate to get cost per lead, then multiply by the leads you need. For many trades that's $1,000 to $5,000 a month in ad spend.

Are Semrush CPCs the same as what I'll pay?

No. They're estimates in US dollars that show relative competition. Your account's real costs depend on bids, quality score and targeting.
